The list part isn’t real at all. It is only 40,000, no matter how you look at it. ANYONE who buys a house should always insist on a home inspection, whether the sellers pay for it or the buyer. But I’m with you on the basements, and L or L too. LOL. The manufactured drama is *never* fun. Not everyone wants to see their house! I live in the area and know a couple who were on the show. I know things come up but is she that bad of a designer/contractor that she can’t budget for some of those things? We pay the high price to live in a beautiful city. The ending is the most silly part of the entire show. I used to love this show but was very surprised and turned off recently when David showed a house on my street and outright lied about the listed price of the home, inflating it by $40k! David makes me laugh. Love the original version, but the new version is painful to watch. I just have a MAJOR problem with them running these contests. Then David would try to convince the homeowners they needed to sell their old place but the first two properties he would show them would never meet their expectations and finally the third house would be the charm! I hope you do. Some parts are weird because Jillian and Todd try to act like Hillary and David but don’t do much of a good job. Our home was featured on an HGTV program about ten years ago before the channel was dumbed down. Even though Love it or List It is “predictable”…it is fun and the hosts are a good fit (the new ones have no magnetism…what a shame…I don’t like watching them, they are so boring)… it’s hard to watch. I would love to see an episode where hilary uses some of the homeowners things instead of spending money on new art/furniture/decor which would allow more of the money to go towards the reno problems; some of the homeowners have a nicely put together house. Behind a drywall panel, a rodent (long gone) pooped on the footer (about 5 seconds worth of broom/dustpan), chewed some insulation (an entire pack costs $40 max), one wire (15 minutes work by an electrician), and replace the one drywall panel. You can tell there are a lot of young, inexperienced producers on that network. I do find it irritating that Hillary always seems to have allotted her entire budget such that something has to be cut. This was before I had realized that HGTV was becoming what might as well be the “Real Estate Channel”. It is SO obvious that they are very good friends. Now, that is the best way to clear up the air on whether the show is fake or not; therefore, if you still complain that the show is fake, the production company does not have to argue with you. They’re not documentaries, they’re entertainment. It’s the same old same old. The sarcastic, unoriginal, ever-so non-witty banter between David and Hilary is mind-numbingly awful and boorish. I would ask that you change your “narrator” her voice is so nasal and whiney….she talks like a depressed “Valley girl” with all her sentences ending in a downslope…really…irritating. Scripted? While many of the designs are very pretty and nice some are so also ostentatious and over the top, while others are so cheap it’s tacky. I feel the same way. West Texas, and many other areas in the US have houses under $100,000. I like the show with HIllary and David. I know they have each of their own homes done on seperate episodes but I don’t recall an episode with them together as a couple getting their house fixed. These people started flipping or got their contractors license for the sole purpose of getting a gig on DYI or HGTV. I miss shows with REAL designers; Christopher Lowell, Chris Madden, Kenneth Brown, et al, that actually taught us something. I haven’t seen the new show. Just curious: What don’t you like about it? I’ve minimized watching the inconsistent HGTV channel drastically over the last year. The black showed every single thing and it was extremely hard to clean. The only reason this show has any following is the occasional bribe of a contest t pay off your mortgage. “Love it or List it” is another show that I find boring. I feel the success of these shows is with a good host you look forward to viewing. But the minute we go to one more island paradise to find that oh-so-special second home, I switch channels. Even if their plan is to win the home and then sell it, they STILL have to pay income taxes on it, and they will STILL have to insure it and pay property taxes on it for as long as they own the home. I realize that the drama can seem exaggerated, but I do think it would be stressful handing over your hard earned dollars to a designer and not always getting everything you want. you name it. But, no way that many people are THAT rude. However, she makes all these plans and assumptions – take a wall down here – move that plumbing there – without checking with her contractors first. For a home on the ocean, the property taxes could run $20K per year or more, and the insurance would also be in the $10K – $12K range, because you have to have hurricane insurance. The HGTV show “Hawaiian Life” also gets on my last nerve, mostly because I live here and there is SO MUCH they don’t tell or show about living here, it’s almost criminal.
